Soap is Not a Harsh Chemical. This video is a lengthy and in-depth look at soap, detergent, and other laundry additives and boosters we use to care for our laundry (including our cloth pads). In an effort to dispel the belief that reusable cloth products are a net loss to the environment because we wash them in "harsh chemicals," I have tried to explain a little science and a lot of basic things about the ingredients and manufacturing methods behind common laundry cleaners. Time markers for the different sections are below.
***NOTE: There is AN ERROR in the video. In the "About Soap" section, I discuss sodium hydroxide, which is a lye. I mistakenly referred to sodium hydroxide lye as soda ash. Later in the video, when I am discussing soda ash (which is washing soda), I made the mistake again, referring to soda ash as "caustic soda," which is the common name for sodium hydroxide lye.
FOR CLARITY: Soda Ash is a benign water softener called sodium carbonate (washing soda). Caustic soda is a strong alkali called sodium hydroxide. I apologize for misspeaking about this rather important distinction. Oh, I knew in an hour long video, I was going to screw something up that I missed in editing.***
